Introduction

Since time immemorial, education in America has been the best as compared to other nations. In fact, people moved from one continent to another in order to come to America to attain their high education. Americans were the beneficiaries of the good and affordable education system in America. The quality of education was also very commendable. However, things have changed in the recent decades. Since the 1980s, tuition fees in colleges and universities have rose by 945%. This is an unrealistic increase in three decades. In fact, most people do not have hope in the future of American high education considering the high tuition fee that is unrealistic and unaffordable (Wilfried 9).

According to President Obama, America should have the largest percentage of graduates by 2010. This is a good dream, but it might not come true if tuition keeps on increasing the way it does now. Americans are fond of reading and ready to sacrifice their time and money to learn. However, the current tuition fee is not affordable to most of students. Students are silently suffering with their family members as they cannot manage to raise the required fees. Parents and guardians are straining to educate their children. In fact, most of the low and middle class earners in America cannot have more than one student in college because they cannot afford to pay fees. This makes some Americans lack chances of getting their degree or diploma, because their elder siblings are in school and no fees is available for them.

Body

Currently, education is seen as the key to success in every aspect of life. Therefore, there is too much demand for education in colleges and universities. As demand increases, university administration hikes the tuition fee. They do not care for those who cannot pay because the demand is more than the supply. The current employment rate makes every young person to aspire attaining the highest possible certificates so that they can fit in the job market. There are few job opportunities and many unemployed hands are looking for jobs. Education is seen as the greatest determiner. The government keeps subsidizing college fees. This worsens the situation because many students join college and the fees is increased.

Most students cannot afford to pay total school fees at the same time. In fact, most of the students are forced by situations to look for a part time job so that they can manage to pay fees and get money for upkeep. This makes them divert attention that should be directed towards education only. In fact, most of the college students in America are part timers. Ultimately, this lowers the quality of education as students do not have time for their studies. They are busy involved in activities that can give them money.

The state has a loan system to give to students who are unable to pay their school fees. However, this loan is not enough. Students are given refundable loans in small amounts that cannot clear the fees and keep the student in class. Therefore, apart from taking the loans, students from low and middle class families are left suffering. They are expected to start paying their loans immediately they get jobs. This becomes difficult especially when one gets a job that is less than $50,000. The individual cannot manage to pay his loan after being in college. This makes most of the students feel that the government is just exploiting citizens.

Colleges and universities charge different tuition fee. Despite the fact that all American nations are under the bracket of the United States, every college has its own fees structure. Some colleges have increased their tuition fee beyond what common citizens can pay. In this case, certain colleges are only attended by children of politicians, ministers, government officials and prominent business persons. This is direct discrimination that the government has been encouraging for the last decade. The government does not want to equalize colleges so that any person can join, provided they have the required qualification (The Chicago Tribune 67).

In addition, college tuition fees are increased depending on the location of the college. Attending a college outside your state has become so expensive. Colleges charge higher fees for foreign students (Bushway 630). They increase fees depending on the location that the student comes from. This is another form of discrimination that the government should have seen and fought. It is illogical to be discriminated on the basis of your geographical location during this 21st century. Mostly, increasing school fees for international students is politically driven. Politicians want to gain from the international students and they ensure they are charged higher fees than those who come from within the host country (McCabe 2).

Both private and public universities and colleges have made tuition fees unaffordable. Originally, colleges charged a reasonable pay so that even students from low income families could join college. Those were times that the government valued the education system and their people. However, today both the public and private universities charge almost similar tuition fee. This makes it hard for students from low background to start and finish college. Those who manage to complete do so with the huge amount of dollar debts waiting to be paid. The government is not concerned because children of government official do not struggle to pay any amount. Therefore, they do not realize the need to correct the wrongs that have been committed (Sahr 15).

As a result of the high fee that is charged, colleges do struggle to fill vacancies during enrolment and construct new buildings. This is meant to help them admit many students for purposes of making more money. It is sad to see college education being commercialized. The quality of education is no longer a concern in colleges. The administration and political structures want to get money from the students and do not care where the money comes from, neither do they value the quality of education offered (Harvey 14). In fact, the increase in tuition fee has made some students to be involved in illegal and immoral activities such as robbery, drug trafficking, prostitution and gambling to get money. This increases crime in the country, making the government to divert money to curb crime. This money could otherwise be used in other constructive activities such as lowering tuition fees for college students.

Research indicates that higher education in America has continually become critical not only for the success of individuals but also the social and economic prosperity of the nation. Even though college enrolment has increased over the last two decades, federal appropriations and state aid have performed dismally in keeping up with the pace of the increasing college fees that place much burden to the students and their parents. Because of this, most students rely on the federal loans so that they can acquire higher education in America. According to statistics, an average borrower of the government loans currently graduates with slightly above $26,000 in loan debt (ACE 23).

Incidences of loans have negative implications for borrowers, especially when it comes to monthly payments using their hard-earned monies as opposed to saving so that they can prosper. In addition, high debt can affect the place where graduates live, the form of career choices they make, the time of starting a family or buying a home, and whether they can have savings for retirement.

For many years, the US higher education has undergone internationalization. This advocacy has particularly been boosted by leadership from a wide range of sources in diverse capacities and focus. For instance, leadership changed from President Lyndon Johnson’s support of legislation, a section of trilogy of law called the Great Society, to a collective and sometimes competitive leadership through a fight to create universal education as authentic focus for higher education organizations (Childress 112). This came in the form of advocates for universal education who were derived from the stakeholders. The advocates for higher education in America included scholars, researchers, specialized firms, and alliances.

During the period, leader-advocates as well competed with philosophical transformations in the manner that higher education perceived itself and its operations (Childress 102). The fight to clear the nature of universal education in America higher education organizations improved the moment it was noted that focus should be a process as opposed to being a thing. This implies that internationalization has played a critical role in advocating for higher education in America. However, the fight goes on with regard to who should be the key beneficiary of internationalization. Despite the fact that many propositions have been put forward through advocacy, in diverse situations, universality of American education has become crucial in higher education dues to internal and external factors to the organization but linked to more endurance of the system and its main objectives.

Currently, higher education advocacy institutions should go a step further on federal student loan design and delivery. According to NASFAA (National Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators), a collection of nine student-help advocacy and research firms have declared that they will act as a consortium to lobby particularly as matters and problems concerning student loan payment (Council 10). In the same way, these groups will emphasize on income-based repayment. America has one of the best if not the best education system in the world. However, the unrealistic and unaffordable increase in college tuition fees has killed the system. There is no future for higher education in America unless something is done. Students cannot afford to pay this increased school fees. They opt to look for part time jobs or get involved in illegal activities. The increase in demand for college certificates has made colleges increase tuition fees beyond the normal rating. Joining a higher education institution outside your state is becoming impossible because the fee is doubled. Political will is lacking to lower college and university tuition fee. Even if President Obama and his party want America to have the greatest number of graduates by 2020, this might not be possible if the government does not intervene and lower tuition fee.

Amid these difficulties in terms of affordability of higher education, it has been established that higher education in America has continually become critical not only for the success of individuals but also the social and economic prosperity of the nation. Even though college enrolment has increased over the last two decades, federal appropriations and state aid have performed dismally in keeping up with the pace of the increasing college fees that place much burden to the students and their parents. Advocacy for higher education in America has its foundation from the internationalization of the system as early as the time of President Lyndon Johnson. Currently, other bodies have come in handy to better the system especially by focusing on how to make things better concerning student
