Film Review on ‘The Muppet Movie’

‘The Muppet Movie’ is a charming children’s film that can best be described as a fantasy adventure and musical comedy. The storyline takes Fozzie Bear and Kermit the Frog on a journey to Hollywood in search of fame. Along the way, they meet other passengers where they sing songs, and Kermit experiences an array of emotions such as self-doubt and modest love.

‘The Muppet Movie’ is an origin story treasured by comic books. It reveals the early days of the Muppets, where Kermit the Frog is seen pedaling to Hollywood. It is the first time for the audience to see the Muppets’ feet and understand how they did it. Understandably, Kermit was born in a swamp but with a unique ability from other frogs: playing the ukulele. He is surprisingly good at it as the audience can see him seated on a log playing it. Kermit is surrounded by water in that scene, which makes one wonder where they hid Jim Henson, the Muppeteer. Apparently, the Muppeteer was in a watertight cubicle with nothing but a walkie-talkie to communicate with the crew.

Kermit’s hands and other movements were remote-controlled, successfully making it look as if he was playing the ukulele. The first challenge Kermit faces is when he sees a fly buzzing past him. He tries to catch it with his tongue but misses. Despairingly, he says, “First thing to go on a frog, his tongue,” remembering his halcyon youthful days when he could catch a fly and mosquito at the same time (The Muppet Movie, 1979).

The movie’s storyline assumes that the audience has already accepted the Muppets as individual personalities that are self-aware. The arrogance of creating a movie about characters who are trying to make a movie requires an exceedingly patient audience who would forgive the smugness and find most jokes funny.

‘The Muppet Movie’ teaches an invaluable lesson of daring to dream and taking the leap. Pursuing one’s dreams and aspirations can be a fairly new reality that can be just as pleasurable as it can be daunting. Some of the lessons that the audience learns from the movie is that there may be moments where fear paralyzes us, but we must have a firm grip of our desires and passions to get through such times. Additionally, there will be moments where we would think we made the wrong decisions and desire to give up. However, by acknowledging that it is all part of the process, people will find the strength to pick themselves up and have tenacity.

The movie teaches that love is blind. Although Kermit and Miss Piggy are biologically different, they fell in love and found happiness with each other. Piggy and Kermit do not care about their differences. All that matters is that they love each other. It poses a challenge for humans who share more similar genetics than Kermit and Piggy but are filled with resentment for each other.

In the final moments of the movie, Kermit eventually signs a Hollywood contract, and they burst into song. He sings, “life’s like a movie, write your own ending” (The Muppet Movie, 1979). The cast responds with, “keep believing, keep pretending; we’ve done just what we’ve set out to do, thanks to the lovers, the dreamers, and you” (The Muppet Movie, 1979). From the song, Kermit tries to convey a message: people get to write their life’s plot and no matter how old they think they are the dreams still matter.

In conclusion, ‘The Muppet Movie’ is a brilliant movie that teaches life values such as the power of love and the importance of having dreams and aspirations no matter how young or old we are. Most importantly, we should pursue our dreams and have the audacity to go past any obstacles.
